How to measure

  1. Stand up straight with your feet together, in light clothing or underwear.
  2. Bust: wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, keeping it level across your back.
  3. Waist: measure the narrowest part of your torso, usually just above the navel. Breathe out normally and don’t pull the tape tight.
  4. Hips: measure around the fullest part of your hips and bottom, with your feet together.
  5. Keep the tape snug but not tight, parallel to the floor, and use the same unit for all three.

How the calculator decides

Your shape comes from a few ratios. The rules are checked in this order, and the first one that matches wins.

ShapeRule
AppleWaist is 85% or more of the wider of bust and hips
PearHips are at least 5% bigger than the bust
Inverted triangleBust is at least 5% bigger than the hips
HourglassBust and hips within 5%, waist 75% or less of the wider
RectangleBust and hips within 5%, waist between 75% and 85% of the wider

These cutoffs are a common convention, not a scientific standard. Read more on the about and method page.

Common questions

How accurate is a body shape calculator?

It sorts your bust, waist and hip measurements into the five most common shapes using simple ratios. There is no universal standard, and different guides use slightly different cutoffs, so treat the result as a starting point for how clothes are likely to fit rather than a fixed label. If you are close to a boundary, the calculator tells you which neighbouring shape to read as well.

Does this calculator save or send my measurements?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and your measurements are never sent to a server or stored.

Can my body shape change?

Yes. Weight changes, pregnancy, hormones, age and training can all move your measurements. Re-measure every few years or whenever your clothes stop fitting the way they used to.

What if I fall between two shapes?

Many people do. When your measurements sit close to a cutoff, the result shows the neighbouring shape too. Read both guides and keep whichever advice fits how you like to dress.

Does this work for men?

This calculator and its outfit advice are written around women’s clothing cuts and sizes. Men have a separate calculator that compares chest, waist and hips with rules and advice built for menswear.
