How to spot the pear shape

  • Hips are at least 5% bigger than the bust
  • Shoulders and bust are narrower than the hips
  • Trousers and skirts often need a bigger size than tops

Calculator rule: Hips at least 5% bigger than the bust, with a waist under 85% of the hip measurement. The bust, waist and hip measurements are taken as described on the calculator page.

How to style it

Pear styling is about balance from top to bottom. Detail, colour and structure on the upper half draw the eye up, while simple, fluid shapes on the lower half let the hips be. The most common fit problem is a size gap: dresses and suits are sold as single sizes, so choose the size that fits your hips and tailor the top, or buy separates.

Lean into

  • Necklines that widen the shoulder line: boat, square and off-the-shoulder
  • Structured shoulders, sleeves with volume and bold prints on top
  • A-line and flared skirts, and wide or bootcut trousers
  • Mid to high waists that sit at the narrowest point

Balance out

  • Clingy fabrics across the hips and thighs
  • Pockets, patterns or embellishments at the hip line
  • Very narrow, high necklines with plain tops

Common questions

Is pear the same as triangle?

Yes. Both names describe hips that are wider than the bust. Some guides also call this shape a spoon.

Can I wear skinny jeans with a pear shape?

Yes. Choose stretch denim in a mid or high rise and balance them with a top that has some volume or structure at the shoulders. If you prefer an easier fit, bootcut and straight legs are simpler to balance.
