How to measure

  1. Stand up straight with your feet together, in a thin T-shirt or bare-chested, with your arms relaxed at your sides.
  2. Chest: wrap the tape around the fullest part of your chest, under the armpits and across the shoulder blades, keeping it level.
  3. Waist: measure around your torso at the navel. Breathe out normally, don’t suck in and don’t pull the tape tight.
  4. Hips: measure around the fullest part of your hips and seat, with your feet together.
  5. Keep the tape snug but not tight, parallel to the floor, and use the same unit for all three.

How the calculator decides

Your shape comes from a few ratios. The rules are checked in this order, and the first one that matches wins.

ShapeRule
OvalWaist is 98% or more of the wider of chest and hips
TriangleHips are at least 5% bigger than the chest
Inverted triangleChest is at least 10% bigger than the hips
TrapezoidNone of the above, and waist is 90% or less of the wider of chest and hips
RectangleNone of the above, and waist is between 90% and 98% of the wider of chest and hips

These cutoffs are a common convention, not a scientific standard. Read more on the about and method page.

Common questions

How accurate is a male body shape calculator?

It sorts your chest, waist and hip measurements into the five most common shapes using simple ratios. There is no universal standard, so treat the result as a starting point for how clothes are likely to fit rather than a fixed label. If you are close to a boundary, the calculator shows which neighbouring shape to read as well.

Does this calculator save or send my measurements?

No. The calculation runs in your browser and your measurements are never sent to a server or stored.

Why does it use chest, waist and hips instead of shoulders?

Shoulder width is hard to measure accurately on yourself, while chest, waist and hips only need a tape measure. Chest and shoulder width usually go together, so the chest measurement is a good stand-in for the upper body.

Can my body shape change?

Yes. Weight changes, pregnancy, hormones, age and training can all move your measurements. Re-measure every few years or whenever your clothes stop fitting the way they used to.

What if I fall between two shapes?

Many people do. When your measurements sit close to a cutoff, the result shows the neighbouring shape too. Read both guides and keep whichever advice fits how you like to dress.
